Rooms, Rates & Policies
The upstairs of The Old Mill House has a snack room, two guest bedrooms, massage therapy room and small balcony. It has original heart pine floors throughout, low door openings, narrow stairs, interesting ceilings and spectacular views from every window. It provides an excellent vantage point to see Kinsey Run bordering the property on one side, the Rapidan River flowing in front, 360 mountain views and relics of an era when the village of Graves Mill supplied every need for families to exist.
The old one-room schoolhouse, the chapel, the post office and the gristmill remind us today of the basic needs in life and just how far progress has taken us away from them. Interior walls and floors have been insulated to provide protection from noises inside the house. Heating and cooling can be adjusted to suit your preference and windows may be opened to allow sounds of nature to be heard. There is nothing more calming than rain falling on a metal roof—a good excuse to take an afternoon nap. A separate water heater assures plenty of hot water when you need it. Exclusive use of the entire upstairs would be at the rate of $200 per night.
Guest rooms at The Old Mill House include two cozy and very comfortable bedrooms each with their own private bath with pedestal sink, shower, wall heater, medicine cabinet, towel hamper and old fashioned floor cabinet filled with extra supplies including robe, slippers, sleep pants, soapy soles, alarm clock, hand mirror, hair dryer/curling iron and everything you need to make you feel at home. A luggage rack and hanging space are provided for your clothing.
If you are looking for finely appointed bedrooms for your B&B experience, The Old Mill House might not suit your needs but if you would like to share family treasures and the old-shoe comforts of home, you will love your time spent here.

Looking out the window at the old gristmill, framed by vistas of the majestic mountains, will remind you of days gone by and the owner’s bedroom suite adds to the authenticity of the era. The maple painted pieces with spinning wheel motif once was the bed she shared with her two sisters. It was only a full-size mattress at that time and they would take turns sleeping two at the head and one at the foot of the bed. The Bates bedspread doesn’t date back quite that far but has been in the family many years as well. |

Watch the river wind its way through the sleepy town of Graves Mill and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of frogs in the pond. Sitting on the loveseat, you can observe the slanted floor which at one time was the roof of a one-story log schoolhouse or you can sit at the small, wobbly wooden desk made from a crate by a young boy many years ago which is now a family heirloom. |

Single Occupancy Rate
Typically, B&B’s are frequented by couples in search of a romantic getaway. Rick Morris of Tennessee found The Old Mill House the perfect place to kick back solo and enjoy the area. So much so that his weekend visit turned into a week-long visit and returning the next summer.

| French doors open onto a balcony where a panoramic view of the mountains and sounds from the babbling brook are mesmerizing. Watch the cattle graze, the deer jump fences, rabbits nibble in the vegetable garden, Canadian geese fly overhead in their V formation or maybe catch a rainbow. Hear the horses neigh, cows moo and birds sing sweetly. Smell the fresh cut hay or wood smoke from the campfire. Watch the sunset and wait for the moon and brilliant stars to fill the galaxy |

Snack Area
The snack area is almost like your kitchen at home only on a much smaller scale. Equipped with round table and four chairs, refrigerator, Delonghi microwave-convection oven-broiler combo, Gevalia coffeemakers, Cuisinart blender and stocked with plenty of teas, coffee, sodas, water and popcorn—everything you need for a quick pick-me-up break. Aunt May’s old cabinet holds dishes and glasses for your use and utensils are handy too. Maps on the walls will let you know where you are and where you are going and vintage luggage contains brochures of area attractions. The telephone in this area is for your use and long distance phone calls can be made at no charge.
There is no cell phone reception in the area (what a wonderful excuse to not constantly be “in touch”). A Rowenta steam iron, shoeshine kit and sewing kit will take care of any grooming emergencies. And if you forgot any of your toiletries, soaps, lotions or toothbrushes will save the day. Handmade items from My Mother’s Stitches Gift Shop adorn the cabinet for your leisure shopping.
As you leave the snack area and proceed down the steps leading to the hallway, you will see a brass plaque above the doorway warning you to Mind Your Head. Take heed. On the walls of the hallway, you will find brief history and an antique map of the property, official license and certification for operation and a shelf of books—biography and autobiography. |
